Abstract Scope |
Standards are important. We all depend on standards because the vast majority of products that we buy are made with materials and processes that satisfy specific relevant standards. We trust in standards for the welding electrodes that we use to build our bridges and buildings, and we trust in standards when we open the tap and drink the water that comes from it. Yet it is increasingly difficult to recruit members to participate in standards development work. When corporate bosses see employees going to a standards committee meeting and main thing they see is a drag on profits. What they don’t see is the new understanding of the standards the company follows that those employees bring home or the resources that they develop by rubbing elbows with and getting to know true experts in the field. This talk will examine approaches that we in standards can use to inform management worldwide of the benefits of having their employees be involved in standards development. |
