Understanding atomic-scale chemical ordering within Medium/High-Entropy Alloys (M/HEAs) is crucial for tailoring their properties. Complementing our work on fcc multi-component alloys (Acta Materialia 193, 329 (2020), Small Science 4, 2300225 (2024)), we focus here on EXAFS measurements conducted on an equiatomic MoNbTaW bcc MEA (Materials Research Letters 12, 346 (2024)). We show that after annealing at 2273 K, short-range order (SRO) around W favors 4d elements in the 1st and 2nd shells. This ordering defines a spatial coherence length of at least 3.2 Å with a Nb-W preference, reminiscent of ordering at intermediate temperatures in B2(Mo,W;Ta,Nb)- and B32(Nb,W)-phases. These findings are in agreement with the earlier studied fcc systems and suggest that high-temperature SRO generally foreshadows low-temperature phase formation. In concert with the EXAFS analysis, we leverage spatially resolved nanoscale property mapping to interrogate local chemistry-elasticity coupling in the studied MoNbTaW bcc MEA. |
