Abstract Scope |
For complex aluminum alloys the formation of primary phases under various cooling conditions is of utter interest. Therefore, conditions during solidification need to be addressed properly. In this study, the laboratory-scale inductively heated continuous casting plant is evaluated and adapted for casting different aluminium alloys such as Al, AlSi, AlMg and AlMgZnCu crossover alloys. The aim is to realize the casting of future alloy designs on a larger laboratory scale as close as possible to industrial production, but with high flexibility in the adjustable cooling conditions. An optimization of the cooling system and mould design are done to achieve successful processing conditions and the intended cooling rates. Modifications are made to the brass cooling system of the crucible. Moreover, tests are carried out in block casting to evaluate the cooling conditions at different height levels of the mould. In addition, this is linked to the microstructure in the cast ingots. |
