Abstract Scope |
Advances in laser launched microparticle impacts have made quantitative measurements of mechanical properties at extreme strain rates possible. Here we present how microparticle impact tests can be used to produce several independent strength measures of metals at strain rates above 106 s-1. Using both in-situ imaging of high velocity hard ceramic particle impacts onto softer metal substrates and post mortem microscopy of impact craters, we assess the plasticity of the metals under these extreme impact conditions. This work is then extended to elevated temperatures, providing a new look at the role of thermal activation in high-rate plasticity. |
