The magnetocaloric effect (MCE), used for solid state refrigeration, can be maximized by increasing the peak maximum entropy change and/or broadening the temperature span. Together these terms expand the integrated isothermal magnetic entropy change. Many studies have examined materials with great potential to enhance the peak entropy change, including MnFe(P,As), La(Fe,Si)H, Gd5Ge2Si2, and others. In this work, the MCE in amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys will be described with an emphasis on composites to enhance integrated isothermal magnetic entropy change over extended temperature spans.
