Abstract Scope |
Cu-Mo composites combine the high thermal and electrical conductivity of Cu with the excellent high temperature properties of Mo and its low thermal expansion coefficient. The aim of this work is to determine how their nano-structuring affects the thermal properties. To this end, 3-layered Cu-Mo sandwiches with Mo content of about 20% were subjected to HPT processing up to 200 turns. During HPT processing, the Mo disk was first fragmented into Mo particles with a characteristic vortex shape to finally achieve fairly homogenous microstructure consisting of nanosized Cu and Mo grains (whose size ranged from 10 to 50 nm). Subsequent annealing allowed to obtained a series of nanocomposites differing in grain size. The effect of HPT processing and subsequent annealing on thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion were evaluated. It is shown that nano-structuring opens new opportunities to significantly extend the properties range of Cu-Mo composites. |
