Abstract Scope |
By employing a high-absorption energy source, electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) has become one of the emerging additive manufacturing (AM) methods in recent years. The spot melting technique, derived from its none-inertia deflection speed, has been a unique feature that can only be found in EB-PBF. While this spot-melting technique opens many regimes for microstructure control in AM-based metals, an in-situ metallographic method is revealed. Here first demonstrated its capability to expose the microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V material concurrently while spot-melting a layer. This method is unique in its ability to reveal a metal’s microstructure without employing traditional metallographic methods like polishing or etching. Intensive texture, microstructural, and image analyses are conducted to demonstrate the relationship between this and the conventional method. The collected data serves as a valuable source for the prediction of texture and microstructure, paving the way for an accelerated metallurgical examination of materials produced by EB-PBF. |
