Abstract Scope |
Dave Bourell is a pioneer researcher and educator in additive manufacturing (AM). Dave’s 1990 SFF Symposium paper, “Solid Freeform Fabrication: An Advanced Manufacturing Approach” and 1993 NSF award, “SGER: Solid Freeform Fabrication: Direct Metals and Composites” laid the foundations for AM. Dave organized most of the 36 SFF Symposia, a major forum for global R&D in AM. He served as an expert for the 2003 WTEC International Study of R&D in Additive/Subtractive Manufacturing to identify research gaps in AM and led the 2009 Roadmap for AM Workshop to guide AM research. Using these studies, NSF supported research that established AM processes such as DED, LPBF, EBFFF, SLA, FDM, inkjet and binder-jet printing. Emerging AM processes such as bioprinting, concrete 3D printing, hybrid methods, and multi-material deposition have also been NSF-funded, along with work to meet AM challenges like process control through cyber-manufacturing, and increased AM throughput by DLP and BAAM. |
