Abstract Scope |
We will present the results of a study on the effects of static corrosion on silicon carbide (SiC) matrix- fabricated by a nano infiltration and transient eutectic-phase - reinforced with unidirectional SiC fibers (NITE-SiC/SiC) after exposure to LiF-NaF-KF (FLiNaK). Through this study, emphasis will be put on understanding the effect of the sintering additives (Al2O3, Y2O¬3 and SiO2) and reduced porosity characteristic of the NITE method on the corrosion behavior at high temperature. The microstructure of the samples will be characterized before and after corrosion using SEM and EDS. XPS will be used to probe the charged states on the surface and shed light on the corrosion mechanisms. XRD will then be used to study the phases present on the surface. The corrosion tests are conducted in a dedicated, argon-filled glovebox using high purity salt held in glassy-carbon crucibles for 100 h and 400 h at 800 C. |
