Abstract Scope |
Due to superior performance with mechanical properties, such as hardness, high temperature performance, and chemical stability, the ceramic market size grew to $240 billion in 2022. While additive manufacturing of ceramics is nascent, these processes grant a high degree of geometric freedom in the design of parts and their materials compositions. By avoiding high thermal gradients and solidification phenomena, we show that binder jet additive manufacturing produces complex oxide and carbide green parts while avoiding traditional limitations such as cracking. We also discuss our successes here in additively printing over 98% dense cemented carbides, through laser powder bed fusion. Methods for densifying (green) printed parts are critical for the final part performance. Accordingly, our post processing work using field-assisted sintering techniques will also be presented. |
