Meeting 2025 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Looking Outside Materials Science: Lessons Learned for and from Materials Discovery - A Student-Led Symposium
Presentation Title Microstructure Characterization and Design with Help from Video Games, Geostatistics, and Other Interdisciplinary Tools
Author(s) Oliver Johnson, Christopher W Adair, Jose Nino, Sterling G Baird
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Oliver Johnson
Abstract Scope Grain boundaries (GBs) have a significant, sometimes dominating, influence on the properties and performance of polycrystalline materials from structural applications to energy storage and conversion and many others. In this talk we discuss several examples of ways in which we approach materials characterization and design in the context of GB sensitive properties by taking inspiration and leveraging tools from outside of materials science, including video games, geostatistics, spectral graph theory, and generative AI.
