Abstract Scope |
Vacuum induction melting (VIM) is used to make superalloy and specialty steels, products that require high cleanliness. Crucible/steel reactions can lead to magnesium-modification of non-metallic inclusions. This was investigated using automated SEM to track inclusions from sequential heats of grade 13-8 PH steels over a VIM melting campaign. The inclusion population changes in the samples suggest that Ca treatment may lead to additional reaction with the crucible and more extensive Mg modification |
