Abstract Scope |
The different structures created by filamentous fungi are created by the organization and combining of a filamentous network. These filaments, hyphae, are made by the propagation of fungal cells and are the constitutive building block of all the structures created by filamentous fungi. The porous nature of these structures provides for relative strength values comparable to wood or bone. Previous work has characterized some of these structures through imaging on the microscale and mechanical testing on the macroscale. Theoretical modeling has been completed to use what is known to estimate the properties of the hyphae on the microscale. Such a model can subsequently be used to estimate the properties of similar structures with different material properties from fungi. |
