Abstract Scope |
Friction stir welding and processing (FSW/FSP) is a solid phase manufacturing approach that joins, processes, and repairs high-performance metals or alloys via large strain, high strain rate, and high temperature below the material's melting point. Enhanced or tailored material properties can be achieved by microstructure modification under specific process parameters. However, the extreme thermomechanical process conditions of FSW/FSP make in-situ observations of the key physical phenomena challenging and costly. Numerical methods provide viable and cost-effective pathway to address the challenges. It is thus vital to develop a reliable process modeling framework that helps elucidate the complex physics associated with FSW/FSP, accelerates design optimization to increase its energy efficiency and to create products with better performance. This talk will discuss the meshfree computational models that are recently developed for FSW/FSP of various materials, the challenges that the model development is facing, and the future directions and attempts to address these challenges. |
