Abstract Scope |
As semiconductor manufacturing continues to increase, various environmental concerns grow, especially regarding the resource-intensive nature of the semiconductor industry. Chip production requires huge amounts of energy, critical minerals, and ultrapure water, contributing to increased emissions among other environmental impacts. Public reporting of water, waste, energy, and scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions is a recent practice among semiconductor companies through voluntary corporate reports. Many companies still do not report, and data remains unstandardized among individual sectors and across the supply chain. Here we present assessment of resource consumption trends and environmental impact across semiconductor supply chain. We present a model index to compare performance toward sustainability goals with respect to energy efficiency and CO2 emissions. This data is used to compare companies within subsectors (fabs, chemical suppliers, equipment manufacturers, etc.) and across geographic regions to identify best practices within subsectors and insights to move industry towards a more sustainable path. |
