Abstract Scope |
This talk reviews a series of studies undertaken by the authors, in conjunction with General Motors and Anil Sachdev, into the role of microstructure in the forming response of various sheet metals. Lightweighting of automotive structures can involve downgauging, by moving to higher strength steels, or replacement of steel with lower density materials, such as magnesium or aluminum. The studies have focused on the influence of microstructure on key deformation mechanism, including transformation in TRIP steels, twinning of magnesium, and localized hardening processes in aluminum. Major progress has been made in terms of characterization techniques (high-resolution EBSD, DIC, machine-learning analysis of data) and simulation (crystal plasticity, self-consistent models, strain-gradient approaches). One major thread running through all of these studies and materials is the impact of grain boundary character on deformation mechanism. This will be highlighted for transformation, twinning and dislocation activity in a range of automotive sheet metals during forming. |
