Abstract Scope |
This paper presents a personal perspective on the key role of materials in global development. Following a brief historical perspective, the talk is divided into three parts (materials for health, energy and the environment). In the first part, multi-scale biomaterials (nanoparticles, targeted drugs and biomedical devices) are presented for the detection and treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases that kill more than 50% of all people. This is followed by a focus on renewable energy in the second part that spans the full range from materials for solar cells, to light emitting devices, batteries and supercapacitors. A combination of machine learning and artificial intelligence is used to guide the development of the next generation of renewal energy solutions. Finally, in the third part, emerging examples of sustainable materials are presented for addressing global challenges in water purification, affordable housing and transportation. |
