Abstract Scope |
Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA) executed a project to improve reliability of DX Reduction pot cell anode clamps in Potlines. Attaining proper clamping force is important to reduce the electric current leakages which in turn will reduce the efficiency and hot metal production in an Aluminum Smelting Plant. Failure of anode clamps are also linked with employee safety as falling of clamp from 2.5 Meters height is a potential threat which may lead into workplace injury.
Multiple breakdowns were observed on anode clamps shaft (average 2-3 clamps/day). Main failure is due to shaft damages which require immediate replacement with help of new spare.
To improve the clamp functionality, number of improvements were introduced in the design which include bigger diameter shaft of 50mm, independent sleeves, centering devices and reinforcement rings. Apart from reliability and safety improvements, the New Design resulted into significant reduction in maintenance cost. |
