Abstract Scope |
Accurate heating of thermoplastic composite materials has critical importance in Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) manufacturing, particularly for in-situ curing processes. Arc-flash lamp technology is a versatile approach for achieving precise heating, offering various means to regulate the flux output. Hence, characterizing the flux output from the heating source and understanding the subsequent thermophysical response of composite materials under such flux become important. This study presents a comprehensive examination of key thermal aspects related to arc-flash lamp-based AFP heating through systematic experimental procedures and simulations.
The investigation involves ex-situ evaluations of heat flux output from the flash lamp and the resultant temperature distribution on a material specimen. These assessments are conducted in a geometry representative of real manufacturing conditions, employing a combination of heat flux sensor and infrared thermography. Additionally, a thermal simulation model is formulated to predict the temperature distribution based on the impinged heat flux data. Good agreement is observed between experimental findings and simulation predictions.
This research significantly contributes to advancing the foundational understanding of heat transfer mechanisms in AFP manufacturing. The data elucidated in this study hold broad applicability to AFP-related investigations and can play a pivotal role in refining process design and optimization strategies. Such enhancements are crucial for unlocking the full potential of this promising additive manufacturing technology. |
