Abstract Scope |
Al-Si-Cu alloys their corrosion resistance suffers due to galvanic corrosion between Cu and α-Al. This study investigates the influence of lanthanum addition on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of Al-Si-Cu alloy. Al alloy specimens with La content ranging from 0 to 1.00 wt% were prepared using gravity casting. Microstructure analysis employed scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical tests confirmed that 0.5 wt% La addition not only refines the microstructure (lower α-Al content) but also significantly enhances corrosion resistance (reduced Icorr and higher polarization resistance) compared to the La-free alloy.
This enhancement is attributed to the formation of a dense passive layer due to La-induced microstructure refinement and improved Cu dispersion.
In conclusion, La addition proves to be an effective method for enhancing both the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Al-Si-Cu alloys. Notably, 0.5 wt% La addition demonstrated the most significant improvement. |
