| Abstract Scope |
In laser-assisted cold spray (LACS) the deposit experiences a complex heat input history due to the simultaneous actions of the laser, CS-gas, and particle deformations. Controlling the laser heating improves the deposition efficiency, porosity, particle bonding ratio and the as-sprayed material properties of the deposit. LACS is very effective for some materials but not straightforward for others. Therefore, it is important to understand its process-structure-property relationships. We present a material accretion model to simulate the thermomechanics in LACS including the heating from the laser, CS-gas, and particles, with a block-by-block material addition model. Model is validated by comparing the thermal history with experiments and used to reveal the temperature history of “each” material point showing the in-situ heat treatment and microstructural and mechanical properties are correlated. The computational approach can be used to optimize the laser power and location to engineer a beneficial thermal history toward a desired microstructure. |
