Abstract Scope |
With increasing importance of green concepts, Bismuth has been highlighted to replace lead as the main element of fusible alloy. The fluidity of binary alloys is theoretically known to have a maximum value in the eutectic composition, as planar growth of intermetallic compound proceeds during solidification until flow stops. Interestingly, in the case of alloy system with highly asymmetric phase diagram, an exceptional increase in fluidity in the hypereutectic composition occurs. Here we comprehensively show the solidification behavior of Bi-Mn alloy system in terms of fluidity and undercooling. Fluidity was compared in a wide composition range including eutectic composition in the Bi-Mn alloy system, which exhibits a large melting temperature difference between the constituent elements. For a more detailed understanding of the solidification behavior, undercooling for each composition was experimentally measured. Through this study, we confirmed that degree of undercooling and the fluidity of the Bi-Mn binary alloy were correlated. |
