Abstract Scope |
Metal-metal interpenetrating-phase composites (IPCs) offer increased flexibility in designing structural materials with tunable mechanical behavior, particularly in IPCs made via dealloying techniques. Dealloying, the selective dissolution of one element from a parent alloy into a solvent, is used to fabricate IPCs with nanoscale morphologies, but this process is challenging to scale up because it relies on immersing an alloy into a molten metal bath. Here, we report the results of a study on laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) of net-shaped dealloying-based IPC components from a two-component powder mixture. By dispersing the alloy and solvent as powders, dealloying occurs in situ during AM processing. However, there are numerous synthesis challenges because microstructural evolution now occurs during dealloying and solidification. We conducted in-depth analysis on the interface stability and chemistry of the melt pool to gain insight into how processing conditions affect the solidification microstructure and the morphology of the composite’s interpenetrating phases. |
