Abstract Scope |
Heterostructured and gradient materials (HGM) have demonstrated tremendous mechanical and functional property improvements due the generation of hetero-deformation induced backstresses at the microstructural interfaces. While a variety of processing methods have been demonstrated, few have the ability to be scaled through the use of conventional, industrial processing equipment. We will present our research on the use of skin pass rolling (small percentage reductions using a rolling mill) as a potential method for generating novel HGMs. Results will be shown for steels, Ni, and Ti to demonstrate microstuctural evolution and property improvements as a function of crystal structure and alloy complexity. The findings will also be discussed in the context of the particular thermomechanical pathways provided by skin pass rolling. |
