Abstract Scope |
We have developed novel manufacturing processes for bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) to fabricate high-performance components. These processes are based on thermoplastic forming, enabled by the unique supercooled liquid state of BMGs. Critical aspects of fabricating high-performance components include achieving superior mechanical properties and geometrical accuracy that are both consistently attained and repeatable. This requires carefully designed processing protocols to avoid crystallization and a low fictive temperature and to avoid heterogeneous effects, such as voids or inclusions. Realizing the highest geometrical precision also requires optimization of a number of processing conditions and specialized mold designs.
The presentation will cover recent advancements in the development of high-performance BMG parts in robotics, space, hydrogen, and other industries. |
