Abstract Scope |
Laser-based Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS) deposition hinder the transformation of ferrite to austenite during solidification due to the high cooling rates which exhibits a ferritic microstructure in the as-deposited condition. This study investigates the in-situ alloying of DSS with pure nickel (Ni) fabricated by Laser-powder blown Direct Energy Deposition. A powder mixture of DSS2209, with 1% and 3% Ni additions was processed to assess the impact on phase distribution, microstructural evolution and material hardness. Results show that Ni significantly alters phase distribution achieving a near duplex phase (with 1%Ni) and fully austenite phase (3%Ni), confirmed by Energy Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis indicating that Ni stabilizes the austenite phase. The microstructure revealed different form of austenite grain with the increasing morphology with higher Ni content. Microhardness showed a decreasing trend with higher Ni content. |
