Abstract Scope |
High-speed in situ synchrotron x-ray imaging in real and reciprocal space is now an established tool for aiding the development and manufacturing of aluminum alloys. This talk will first review the wide range of roles in situ radiography and tomography have played in advancing the processing and application of aluminum alloys. Starting with high volume applications such as low and high pressure die castings, we’ll explore how defect formation, from porosity to hot tears was quantified and optimized. Next, synchrotron studies of exciting new low volume but high value applications, such as additive manufacturing, will then be investigated. The talk will conclude with discussion of the potential of ongoing/future applications exploiting the characteristics of 4th generation synchrotrons. |
