Abstract Scope |
Ag2Te is a silver chalcogenide that transitions from a low-temperature monoclinic β-Ag2Te to a high-temperature cubic α-Ag2Te, exhibiting liquid-like properties due to highly mobile silver ions. This phase transition causes significant lattice strain and structural deformation, squeezing silver ions and promoting silver whisker formation. Using synchrotron radiation powder XRD and X-ray Laue diffraction, this study the growth mechanism of silver whiskers and identified inhibition strategy. By doping gallium to form a low-mobility Ag-Ga solid solution, silver whisker formation was significantly suppressed. This optimization improved the stability and thermoelectric performance of Ag2+xTe samples. Specifically, 1.5 at% Ga-doped samples showed a 50% increase in thermoelectric performance at 623 K. The first commercial apparatus measurements of Ag2Te single-leg thermoelectric efficiency achieved a maximum conversion efficiency of 2.28% at a 300 K temperature difference. |
