Natural fibers such as abaca (Musa textilis) have continuously been utilized in the production of fiber-reinforced polymer composites (FRPC) due to their relatively low processing cost, greater availability, better lightweight properties, and better specific strength and modulus compared to synthetic fibers. Abaca is one of the most utilized and profitable sources of natural fibers in the Philippines given their abundance and mechanical properties. The extraction of abaca for natural fiber production has steadily increased, making it popular in producing FRPCs due to its high tensile strength, shelf life, and flexural strength. This study investigates the ballistic performance of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)–abaca fiber-reinforced composite laminates with different reinforcement ratio to determine the maximum amount of abaca that can partially substitute the UHMWPE layers without decreasing the ballistic performance. The finite element analysis of the ballistic performance of the composites was conducted using ANSYS 2022 R2. The numerical simulations showed that the composite having 25 layers of UHMWPE and 15 layers of abaca can withstand the bullet impact having the least bullet penetration of 6.72 mm resulted from the stress and kinetic energy absorbed by the plate measured at 108.49 MPa and 56.83 J, respectively. |
