Abstract Scope |
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are functional materials exhibiting specific shape memory and superelastic effects, which found number of potential applications in micro and nano technologies. In particular, Cu-based SMAs offer a very good behavior at small scale in comparison with the traditional TiNi alloys. However, the functional properties of SMAs at small scale exhibit several size effects on the stress-induced martensitic transformation, in particular on the superelastic behavior.
In the present work we present the characterization of the superelastic behavior in Cu-Al-Ni and Cu-Al-Be SMAs at small scale. A new methodology of sample preparation by focused ion beam (FIB) was developed to mill samples with section below 1 square micrometer. Then, in-situ nano-compression and nano-tensile test have been performed inside the scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM & TEM). The nano-mechanical tests will be presented together with the in-situ images and videos at the SEM and TEM. |
