Abstract Scope |
Metal additive manufacturing (AM) has engendered a new age of advanced materials. The fatigue performance of these new materials must be well-defined by thorough testing. However, fatigue sample preparation and testing are time-consuming and expensive. Moreover, the high cost of the AM process exacerbates fatigue testing expenses. Many fatigue tests of AM metals have been reported in the literature, yet many researchers outsource their sample preparation. This often leads to procedure descriptions that are brief and lacking in detail. There is a pressing need for academia and industry to thoroughly examine the AM fatigue sample preparation and testing procedures to justify the associated cost, time, and fatigue data quality. In this paper, AM fatigue sample preparation methods are surveyed and compared. An in-house sample preparation procedure using electric discharging machining and a resonance-based fatigue testing method is introduced, providing a concrete example of the efficient generation of quality fatigue data. |
