Abstract Scope |
Molten salt reactors (MSRs) using fueled salts quickly become complex mixtures of large number of elements due to fission product and transuranic element production plus formation of corrosion products and potentially environmental oxygen or moisture. Modeling salt behavior to inform the design, operation, and regulation of MSRs is a requirement, which has led to the development of the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database – Thermochemical (MSTDB-TC) to allow computing of the equilibrium state of salts and other reactor materials. The ongoing development of MSTDB-TC for both fluoride and chloride systems will be described, including the recent emphasis on the addition of iodine due to its importance to reactor safety analysis. Oxygen- and hydrogen-containing components are being added to allow assessment of the effect of these salt contaminants. Examples of calculations exploring the influence of these constituents and overall in-reactor salt behavior will be presented. |
