Abstract Scope |
A series of Al-Cr-Mn-Co-Zr alloys containing dispersed quasicrystals is being developed as structural alloys for aerospace applications. Gas-atomized powders with FCC Al matrix and quasicrystalline icosahedral phase (I-Phase) dispersoids microstructure were consolidated using controlled spark plasma sintering (SPS). The I-phase is inherently metastable, making it crucial to understand and control its thermal decomposition (crystallization) during processing. In this study, we investigated the controlled sintering of this alloy with the aim of retaining I-phase in the consolidated material. The effects of sintering parameters on densification and phase transformation were examined through a combination of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, focused ion-beam milling and x-ray diffractometry. |
