Abstract Scope |
Metallic alloys fabricated using fusion based additive manufacturing processes such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) are subjected to non-equilibrium conditions (combination of steep thermal gradients and rapid thermal cycling) that results in metastable phases with columnar grains. During LPBF the spatial and temporal variations in energy density of the laser result in site-specific variations in microstructures. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the phase transformation pathway under these complex thermal conditions is needed. Here, we study the microstructural variations observed in 17-4 precipitation hardened (PH)stainless steel builds. The phase fraction, morphology and size distribution of the constituent phases within builds from two separate runs with different sample arrangements are characterized using electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction experiments. Based on these results, the pathway for the formation of the metastable phases and its transformation to equilibrium phases in the as-fabricated and post-processed 17-4 PH steel builds respectively will be discussed. |
