Presentation Title Potassium Removal from Aluminum Electrolyte in Aluminum Electrolysis Process

On-Site Speaker (Planned) Bao Shengzhong
Abstract Scope Address to the problem of high potassium content in aluminum electrolytes in southwestern China, a technical solution of potassium removal form electrolyte was proposed. Systematic analysis and demonstration of the proposed solution were carried out, based on the actual situation of a certain aluminum smelter. The results showed that KF in aluminum electrolytes was volatile and entered into the electrolytic flue gas in form of solid volatiles such as KAlF4, K2NaAl3F12 and K2NaAlF6. The contents of KF in solid volatiles sampled in different smelters, which had the different electrolyte system, were basically similar. The concentration of KF in electrolytic cell could be quickly reduced by collecting the solid volatiles and preventing them from mixing with fluorinated alumina and entering the electrolytic cell again. The high potassium fluoroaluminates, which is separated from the collected solid volatiles by flotation method, could be used to prepare the KF-NaF-AlF3 based low-temperature electrolytes.
