Abstract Scope |
The quest for solid-state actuators, which are actuated directly from an electric field with no moving parts, has long been pursued. Commonly used piezoelectric and ferroelectric actuators achieve this feat due to their non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. Recently, Lai and Schuh (PRL, 2021) used a direct electric field to induce the phase transformation in paraelectric zirconia via an electric susceptibility mismatch. Because the electric susceptibility is anisotropic and the phase transformation can proceed by different variants, the role of orientation must be clearly understood. Specifically, we examine how the orientation of the field relative to the starting crystal orientation affects the conditions required for transformation via a thermodynamic model. The required electric field for transformation is mapped by orientation and identifies which variant is likely to be selected for that condition. We also examine the implications of this process in a polycrystalline sample with a variety of orientations. |
