Abstract Scope |
It has become clear that the coupling between mechanics and electrochemistry play a key role in phenomena ranging from Li penetration, interfacial void formation, active material pulverization, interfacial impedance, interphase formation, and more. In this talk, I will cover aspects of three recent studies that have leveraged operando video microscopy to observe morphological evolution that results from coupled electro-chemo-mechanics in SSBs. The first two will focus on Li penetration and void formation during cycling. The morphology evolution is characterized under various cycling conditions, with multiple distinct morphologies of Li penetration observed. The third will focus on the critical role that mechanical stresses play in the anode formation process in anode-free SSBs. The role of stack pressure uniformity and amount is discussed. A model of the mechanics at play during anode formation is developed and used to guide rational design for improved performance. |
