Abstract Scope |
Part qualification is often posed as a key barrier to widespread implementation of novel manufacturing techniques, including cold sintering. However, microstructure characterization is often relegated to techniques that require extensive sample sectioning and surface preparation, which are inherently limited to a small portion of the bulk material. In this presentation, I will show how nondestructive ultrasonic testing can be combined with physics-based models to extract microstructural parameters. Our results provide unique insights into the cold sintering process, a manufacturing method for ceramics which enables densification at temperatures below 300 degrees Celsius by utilizing a transient liquid phase and uniaxial pressure. The effect of transient phase chemistry, heating rate, and component size are explored relative to the resulting microstructure and mechanical and electrical properties in two model material systems: zinc oxide and sodium molybdate. The ultrasonic data is validated with X-ray computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy. |
