Abstract Scope |
Refractory alloys present an opportunity to extend the service temperatures of structural metallic systems beyond Ni-based superalloys. Historical development of thermomechanical processing (TMP) strategies utilized pilot-scale experimental approaches that down-selected to more workable refractory alloys out of necessity. Methods of success required exceptionally high processing temperatures, expensive environmental protection and reduced ingot sizes that limited wider spread adoption of these alloys. Modern characterization techniques are helping improve our understanding of TMP relevant deformation mechanisms and related microstructural evolution. This talk will share results exploring the microstructural features pre-existing and developed during TMP, their advantageous or deleterious effects, as well as possible processing techniques to control these features. Perspectives will be given for the importance of TMP and overall control of microstructure in the on-going alloy development exploration of refractory complex concentrated alloys. |
