Abstract Scope |
While conventional laser powder bed fusion often uses a single laser beam to melt powder particles, more recent studies have taken advantage of multiple beams to increase processing speed and better control energy input. Despite these developments, some obstacles still need to be addressed regarding how the interactions between multiple molten pools and subsequent solidifications influence the resulting product. In this work, we use synchronized laser beams to create two molten pools running parallel to each other, separated by a small spatial offset. Through varying the spatial offset, experimental results reveal that besides the completely merged and completely separated regimes, there exists a new regime in which periodic coalescence occurs between the two molten pools. The microstructure within the coalesced sections is examined and compared with that within merged and separated sections to determine the effect of this novel solidification process. |
