Abstract Scope |
Magnetocaloric materials and characterization have attracted significant attention centered around the potential for devising new methods of efficient cooling in challenging environments. When estimating the potential for cooling applications, magnetometry techniques can be used to explore the thermal hysteresis for certain materials.
Most of the current characterization techniques are burdensome calorimetric measurements; here we propose VSM-based magnetic measurements which offer the advantage of non-contact measurements, simple sample preparation, and considerably shorter measurement times. Temperature-dependent magnetometry measurements of the magneto-structural phase transition in (NiMnSi)0.66(Fe2Ge)0.34 alloy will be presented and correlated with the magnetocaloric properties.
Challenges and the extension of measurements of thermal hysteresis in magnetic properties will be discussed. Inspired by similar measurements of magnetic hysteresis, the First Order Reversal Curves (FORC), subtle changes otherwise invisible in the conventional thermal hysteresis can be identified by this FORC analog and shed light on magnetic microstructures in these materials. |
