The failure behavior of resistance spot welds in ultra-high strength hot stamped steels plays a vital role in overall performance of safety components in automotive body structures. Typical finite element methods use simple force-based failure criterion coupled with beam/shell elements to predict failure for crash simulation. Although these conventional techniques are simple and computationally inexpensive, they do not accurately capture through-thickness strains, damage processes, and post-failure response of spot welds. In the present work, a meso-scale spot weld model was coupled with the Generalized Incremental Stress State dependent damage MOdel (GISSMO) to predict failure of spot welds in ultra-high strength hot stamped steel sheets. To account for microstructure gradient within the weld region, the constitutive flow behavior and fracture limit curves were interpolated based on experimentally measured hardness profiles. The results showed that the models can accurately predict failure behavior of spot welds as well as failure location and post failure response. |
