Resilience in raw materials and manufacturing value chains is a key topic, driving the policy agenda around the globe. It is essential to support the green energy transition and combat climate change which depend on (critical) raw materials' availability. The implementation of the circular economy strategies, all simultaneously and at scale, is key. It entails reducing primary raw materials use, increasing bio-based or regenerative materials use, extending product lifetimes, and increasing recycling for all materials, and using renewable energy sources. Remanufacturing – a lifetime extension strategy - is hardly discussed in the TMS community. When implemented at scale, remanufacturing fundamentally changes product and material value chains: product design, manufacturing, usage, and recycling. The characteristics of end-of-life flows; their quantity, quality (composition), and moment of arising, impact the recycling industry. This presentation explores the contribution of remanufacturing, and what insights from recycling and manufacturing can be deployed in a remanufacturing context.
