Abstract Scope |
Development of metallic glass-forming compositions has been largely by trial and error. It is estimated that there are as many as 106 usefully distinguishable glass-forming compositions. High-throughput and machine-learning-based techniques have been developed, but their application has so far been limited. Efficient targeting accelerates high-throughput composition searches and clearly offers reduction of the human and financial cost of the search for new bulk metallic glasses (BMGs).
To improve the efficiency of searching for new glass-forming compositions by high-throughput or trial-and-error methods, we propose a new quantitative screening approach using a priori parameters validated by currently known compositions and quantitative CalPhaD-based assessment of glass-forming ability. Using this approach, we have identified a new 18 K gold-based bulk metallic glass with increased tarnish resistance, and this is under development for application in luxury goods. |
