Abstract Scope |
Although heterogeneous structures materials have received extensive attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, the evolution of strain distribution and its relationship to dislocation patterning during deformation of such materials remains unclear. In this work, TC4/Ti laminates with different volume fraction and interface spacing were fabricated by spark plasma sintering to produce samples with fully recrystallized initial grains. The deformation of these laminates has been studied using in-situ tensile loading in a scanning electron microscope combining digital image correlation and electron back-scatter diffraction. Mechanical testing reveals a yield strength and tensile strength of consistent with a rule-of-mixtures model, but with enhanced elongation depending on the fraction of the hard phase and interface spacing. Based on the microstructural observations this is attributed to improved strain delocalization whereby during tensile deformation strain is initially concentrated in the Ti layers and then transferred throughout the sample depending on the interface arrangement. |
