Abstract Scope |
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is essential for assessing damage and determining repair requirements. Ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) inspections are an NDE method capable of wide-area damage assessments of composites. This study aims at quantifying the interaction of guided waves with distinct single-mode damage such as delamination, fiber breakage, and matrix cracking, in composite laminates. Experiments with single-mode damages on AS4/977-3 prepreg composite plates have been conducted and Ultrasonic Guided Wave (UGW) simulations are conducted using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The method includes an excitation source with two reception points along the guided wave path to capture data before and after the damage location.
To validate model accuracy, the study employs a mesh convergence test, dispersion curve matching, and geometric comparisons between different model sizes, along with validation against an alternate numerical simulation approach, namely a Global Local analysis. Of particular focus are the wave characteristics between undamaged and damaged states: changes to the wave’s stress distribution can be used as a damage-sensitive feature by comparing wave characteristics between pristine and damaged plates. Stress waves have been found to be modified by the presence of damage, sensitivity is affected by a change in excitation frequency. Studies were conducted between 50-300kHz. Statistical features were extracted and compared to determine the effects of the damage on the stress wave path plot. |
