| Abstract Scope |
Multiple obstacles have plagued the development of high strength AFSD applications such as a lack of comprehensive characterization, and the need for new tooling, process controls, and post processing. This often-disjointed development has prevented the achievement of required final properties to meet customer needs, increasing lead times and aircraft-on-ground penalties across the services. ASTRO America, under contract with Army DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) and Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing Technology Center, has partnered with a large team of university researchers, industry research labs, DoD partner organizations, and industry specialists to further qualification and the adoption of AFSD. This project team is in a unique position to address a range of problems spanning from design to production, to include microstructure considerations, non-destructive testing, simulation, quality, and standardization, enabling rapid advancement into a low-rate production phase within two to three years. |
