Abstract Scope |
With the current development of molten salt-cooled advanced nuclear reactors comes the limited selection of code qualified structural materials available to build these reactors. Among these already qualified materials, understanding of how they perform under simultaneous irradiation and corrosion is also limited. SS316, Ni-20Cr, and Inconel 625 were simultaneously irradiated with 2.8 MeV protons and exposed to molten FLiNaK at 650°C and damage rates of 1.2x106-7.9x106 dpa/s at the alloy-salt interface. SS316 shows limited corrosion of the non-irradiated area and a severe increase in corrosion at the irradiated grain boundaries. SEM/EDS analysis shows that grain boundary surface corrosion rate is greatly impacted by proton irradiation and EBSD analysis suggests grain boundary character plays a role. Underlying mechanisms of this corrosion behavior under irradiation will be discussed. Characterization of the irradiated Ni-based alloys is underway and will be presented. |
