Abstract Scope Zirconia is one of the most important ceramics for biomedical applications. And additive manufacturing (AM) has expanded fast in recent years, enabling customization of complex shapes and providing an unprecedented possibility to process ad personam zirconia implants and prostheses. Nevertheless, compared to metals, ceramics are less tolerant to processing-related defects, implementation of AM in the ceramic industry is thus more challenging. In our lab, we have explored the possibilities of processing zirconia ceramics by three different AM techniques (vat polymerization, direct ink writing and material jetting). We will show the pros and cons of the three AM techniques to fabricate zirconia ceramics. The influence of various AM processing defects on the strength and strength-dispersion has been followed and critically analyzed. While in general AM still results in larger and more numerous processing defects than other well-established industrial technologies, the use of damage-tolerant zirconia in AM process has a great potential.
