Abstract Scope |
Phase transformations in ceramics play a critical role in developing new materials with desirable properties, such as metastable phases or structures that can accommodate unconventional order. This talk presents recent experimental investigations on the phase transformations in ceramic materials under extreme external forcing. We examined simple sesquioxide (A2O3) materials exposed to relativistic ions and high energy ball milling using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron total scattering techniques to examine the multi-scale structural modifications. By varying parameters such as ion species, ion energy, milling tools, and operating speed, we drove a variety of structural transformations in the simple cubic sesquioxides including transitions to high-temperature and high-pressure variants that are otherwise irrecoverable. These results contribute toward facilitating the discovery of novel materials with unique properties and functionality. |
